No rain for the Tryon area, but some good showers reportedly fell in nearby areas. Increased security went into effect in Florida where six planes were hijacked last week and another attempt was foiled. Cuban refugees unhappy with life in the United States are trying to get back to Cuba Among the 42-Highway Patrol Cadets and eight Alcohol Law Enforcement Cadets who gradu ated Aug. 15th from the combined 67th Highway Patrol Basic School and the 2nd Alcohol Law Enforcement Basic School in Raleigh was Larry James Lawter of Columbus Mr. Lawler who is an Alcohol Law Enforcement Graduate has been assigned to Newton in District IX. He was formerly with the Tryon Police and the Polk County Sheriff’s Dept. There is some excellent tennis being played locally. Gaden Corpening of Tryon was present ed a plaque for third place in the N. C. Junior Closed Tennis Tournament for 21 and under at Chapel Hill. Some excellent tennis was played in the American Cancer Society’s Mens Continued On Back Page Davina Satterfield Is Crowned Junior Miss Columbus Davina Satterfield, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Satterfield was crowned "Junior Miss Colum bus" Saturday night at Stearns School Named first runner-up was Connie McCall, daughter of Mrs Kay Greene McCall and 2nd runner-up was Tena Greene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Roy Greene. Polk Gets $71,749.43 The 1 percent Sales and Use Tax Collections returned to Polk County for the second quarter were $71,749.43. Of this amount the county received $56.381 05, Columbus $3,819.36, Saluda $2,500 77 and Tryon $9,048.25. Homecoming For Hill Crest School The Hill Crest School will have Homecoming Sunday, August 24th at Sandy Plains ARP Church beginning at 10 a m. Bring lunch sufficient for members of your family. The American Horse Shows Association, Inc. reports that Peacemaker owned by Cari Williams of Tryon is presently tied for 4th place in the Dressage Third Level section at the mid-point of the year-long competition for the Horse-of-the- Year Awards. Jennifer Fisher Is Crowned Miss Columbus Miss Jennifer Fisher was crowned Miss Columbus Satur day night at Stearns School Named first runner-up was Miss Jerri Hill, daughter of Mr and Mrs. James Hill and 2nd runner-up was Miss Mandy Ashley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ashley. Miss Janet Mills was named by the contestants as "Miss Congeniality.” The Miss Columbus for 1980 is the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Douglas Fisher of Columbus. A graduate of Polk Central High School, she has attended UNC at Chapel Hill for two years and has been accepted in the School of Art at East Carolina University where she will be a junior. She plans on getting a degree in graphic arts. At Polk Central she was a nominee for the Morehead Scholarship and was elected “Miss Polk Central." She has been active in the Tryon Youth Center’s summer theater produc tions. Her community activities have included the Girl Scouts, serving as a Candy Striper at St. Continued On Back Page FISH Needs Volunteers FISH, an organization of volunteers from the Tryon-Co lumbus-Landrum area dedicated to help people in need, needs more volunteers to man the office phone. Communication is by phone by a person in need to the FISH office (859-6500) in the Meeting Place in Tryon. Volunteers man the phone in the office Monday through Friday from 9:00 A M. to 12:00 Noon, after which the calls are transferred automatically to 1 Brunella Massey in her home. It is for this function that more volunteers are required because attrition has reduced our help to a minimum. The office maintains a card file of volunteers who are willing to furnish transportation, make calls to shut-ins. read to the blind, or offer other help that the situation calls for. Volunteers responding to this appeal may call the FISH office (859-6500) to register their service, or call Liz Graeme, our Volunteer Scheduler at 894-8383 Walter Keffer at 894-3405, or George Blaine at 859-6259.
